Interview Tips

You get it—internships are important, but preparing for the interview can be stressful. Here are some tips from the experts at Sequent to help you nail your interview.

  • Think of an interview as a first date. You are both trying to find out if there is a match. This way you come off as curious, not desperate, and you will ask questions.
  • Research the company before the interview.
  • Do not be rude to receptionists! They are your first point of contacts and they do talk to the interviewers.
  • Make a good first impression—you only get one chance!
  • Keep eye contact with the interviewer.
  • Stay positive.
  • Gather your thoughts before your response. This will help you to avoid "umm", "like," and "you know."
  • Focus on your achievements relative to the position and share your knowledge and experiences.
  • Answer the questions completely but do not ramble.
  • Practice sharing your success stories ahead of time so they are fresh in your mind for the interview.
  • Be energetic and enthusiastic.
  • Believe in yourself.
  • Be authentic.
  • Avoid controversial topics and "gossip."
  • Avoid being a know it all.
  • Do not ask about benefits, vacation time, or salary on the first interview.
  • If you ask for feedback, be prepared to hear things you may not want to hear. Do not argue or defend yourself. Use that advice to prepare for the next interview.
  • When on a phone interview, do not answer your call waiting.
  • Be comfortable and professional, and most of all be yourself! If you pretend to be someone you aren't, then you are just cheating yourself and won't find the perfect fit!
