Parent Advocate at National Youth Advocate Program

Expires May 5, 2010

Share your experience with people who need it most!  Contact us today to learn more about becoming a mentor with Parent Advocate Connections.

We are actively looking for individuals who are open to sharing their life experiences and open communication skills with families who need their support and guidance.  You can help build a stronger community by mentoring parents.

Parent Advocate Connections is an effort by the National Youth Advocate Program to bring together mentors with parents that are involved in the child welfare system. As a mentor you will have a chance to help a family in need and be an advocate for positive change in a family’s life.

Parent Advocate Connections is a volunteer program that matches experienced adults as mentors to parents who have come in contact with the child welfare system. Mentors provide guidance and support, possibly during crisis situations, assist with day-to-day activities like  escorting parents to appointments, connecting parents with community resources, helping parents improve parenting and life skills and creating a more stable environment at home.

The goal of the program is to give parents the skill set they need to strengthen their family and eliminate the need to remove a child or youth from the home.

 NYAP mentors will receive:
  • Training before they are introduced to a family or parent and ongoing support
  • An opportunity to contribute to the success and strengthening of the community
  • Personal fulfillment through helping a family in need
  • Reimbursement paid once a month to help cover program related expenses
NYAP mentors are required to:
  • Successfully complete a federal and state background and reference check
  • Be a mature adult
  • Communicate openly and without judgment of the parents and youth being mentored
  • Have tolerance and respect for individual differences, opinions and perspectives
  • Have access to transportation. If personal transportation is used, mentor must provide valid driver’s license and automobile insurance with a minimum of $100,000/300,000 coverage.
