The primary goals of the Government Affairs Office include:

•Advocate for a pro-business environment in Central Ohio.

•Work directly with local, state, and federal leaders to encourage job growth and investment in Columbus.

•Provide information to business and government alike about Central Ohio’s economic development and public policy concerns.

Sample Tasks:

Regional Economic Assessment

Often political leaders are curious about how Columbus is comparing to similar cities inside and outside of Ohio. Duties will include using available economic information and to determine trends and provide succinct and accurate information regarding local economies. Some original data gathering may be required for certain projects requiring direct communication and footwork.

Actual Examples:

•Analyze the possible economic implications of eliminating the Columbus Streetcar proposal.

•Research, analyze, and help present potential infrastructure projects to the Infrastructure Steering Committee.

•Create, distribute, and analyze surveys concerning economic issues of the area.

Business Meetings and Presentations

Due to the broad field of public policy, meetings are often required between agencies to determine the necessity of projects or update the Chamber on the status of certain issues. Duties will often include attending meetings on your own to evaluate and note the merits of varying programs and reports.

Actual Examples:

•Attend meetings concerning the development of infrastructure in the Rickenbacker area.

•Help to brief Legislative Aids on the Chamber’s priorities and goals.

•Research areas of interest for the Workforce Leadership Council.

Public Policy Research

The Chamber established a Public Policy Agenda every couple years that sets its goals for local, state and federal policy. Duties include analysis of other economic development institutions, feasibility studies, and impact analyses. Occasionally duties may also require presentation of available information regarding key programs to business and Chamber officials.

Actual Examples:

•Participate in the Chamber’s Government Affairs Steering Committee Meetings

•Contact elected officials in order to find how their priorities match with that of the Chambers on specific issues.

•Help write and research new public policy position papers.
