Parent Advocate at National Youth Advocate Program

Expires April 8, 2012

Are you obtaining a degree in a field of social and human services? Are you looking for an opportunity to gain experience, develop skills and enhance your resume?

Parent Advocate Connections Program is actively looking for individuals who are open to sharing their life experiences and open communication skills with families who need their support and guidance. You can help build a stronger community by mentoring parents.

Parent Advocate Connections is an effort by the National Youth Advocate Program (NYAP) and is a volunteer program that matches experienced adults as mentors to parents who have come in contact with the child welfare system. Mentors provide guidance and support, possibly during crisis situations, assist with day-to-day activities like escorting parents to appointments, connecting parents with community resources, helping parents improve parenting and life skills and creating a more stable environment at home.

The goal of the program is to give parents the skill set they need to strengthen their family and eliminate the need to remove a child or youth from the home.

 NYAP mentors are required to:
  • Successfully complete a federal and state background and reference check
  • Demonstrate interest in working with and to positively impact a family
  • Complete pre-service training. No previous experience or special skills needed. PAC program will provide intensive pre-service training and ongoing support for Parent Advocates being assigned to the family.
  • Have access to transportation. If personal transportation is used, mentor must provide valid driver’s license and automobile insurance with a minimum of $100,000/300,000 coverage.
  • Have tolerance and respect for individual differences, opinions and perspectives
  • Commit for a minimum of 6 months with at least two meetings per month
NYAP mentors will receive:
  • An opportunity to gain experience and develop new skills (such as working with diverse families and motivating family to succeed) in a filed of human services.
  • An opportunity to have a meaningful and significant volunteer experience
  • An opportunity to enhance a resume
  • An opportunity to meet new friends
  • Various training opportunities, including pre-service training before they are introduced to a family
  • An opportunity to contribute to the success and strengthening of the community
  • Personal fulfillment through helping a family in need
  • Reimbursement paid once a month to help cover program related expenses
