City Year is an education focused, nonprofit organization that unites young people of all backgrounds for a year of full-time service to keep students in school and on track to graduation. At City Year’s 21 urban locations across the United States and two international affiliates, over 1,900 energetic, creative and idealistic corps members between the ages of 17-24 years old are making a difference in their communities, one student at a time. Corps members serve full-time in schools for the academic year as tutors, mentors and role models. Through attendance and behavior initiatives as well as one on and one and small group tutoring, corps members are able to help students stay on track to graduate. Position OverviewBased in a fast paced and lively atmosphere, the Communication Intern will work closely with the Development and External Affairs Departments to help increase City Year's exposure to Central Ohio. They will work to help develop innovative outreach campaigns through the creative use of events, social media and community engagement. Responsibilities
- Align social media promotional efforts with the organization’s marketing activities
- Engage in inventive online conversations on behalf of the brand, including scheduling and regularly sending out messaging and content through social media outlets
- Collect statistics about our social media site and analyze them to establish trends
- Work with External Affairs Project Leader to produce corporate sponsor newsletters
- Support the logistical aspects of major site events: Martin Luther King Day of Service, Starry Starry Night, Idealism Awards, and Corps Member Graduation with the Development Director
- Create and update displays to help relay the mission and vision of City Year to visitors
- Develop and implement strategies for securing media mentions in local print, TV and radio media with the External Affairs Project Leader
- Assist with developing press releases, press kit materials, fact sheets and advisories
- Act as support for departmental events
- Other duties as assigned
- Marketing, Communications, or Public Relations Majors
- Energetic personality with a creative spirit
- Ability to work a minimum of 15-20 hours a week
- Possess strong interpersonal and public speaking skills
- Ability to work as an independent leader and a team member
- Highly organized with a knack for the details
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Proactive problem solver who demonstrates initiative
- Social Media Butterfly - Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn
- Prior experience and comfort with Microsoft Office software – Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher
- Ability to multi-tasks and think critically
- Possess flexibility and a "can do" attitude
- Desire to work with a diverse staff
