5 Myths About COTA Debunked
5 MYTHS ABOUT COTA DEBUNKED
Haters gonna hate, but COTA is still Columbus’ main public transportation system. Here are a 5 misconceptions with logical reasonings to prove them otherwise.
1. ONLY CRAZY PEOPLE RIDE THE COTA AND I’M NOT CRAZY
First, only crazy people say they aren’t crazy….
Second, COTA opens its bus doors to anyone who would like to ride and will pay the fare. (It’s $2.00 currently)
This includes people who might talk to themselves, laugh hysterically, or stare at you. They may make you feel uncomfortable, but just because they seem scary to you doesn’t mean that they are going to hurt or harm you. When you ride, remember the common denominator: everyone, even the “crazies”, are just trying to get from point A to point B.
2. THE BUSES DON’T RUN ON TIME
When a bus runs late it all of a sudden means that ALL buses run late. This is not the case. There are a few ways you can avoid waiting for a long time at a bus stop.
a.) Plan your trip via Google Maps and just get there a few minutes early because the buses might run fast instead of slow.
b.) If you know your bus number you can TXT 4 NXT BUS by texting C with the bus number to 25-252 (available in short north and Ohio State districts)
c.) If the bus is really running late you can call COTA and ask where it is, the phone number is on the bus stop sign
3. IT’S DANGEROUS TO TAKE THE BUS
I usually hear this when I am walking around Ohio State’s campus, I think it is a rumor that spiraled from the first myth about only crazy people riding the bus. Here is the wonderful thing about COTA, their number one priority is your safety. Bus drivers are committed to getting you to your destination safely. If they believe someone is harassing another rider, they will tell them to exit the bus. They also have radios in case they need to call in emergencies or suspicious behavior. There is no reason that you shouldn’t feel safe, but if you don’t, tell your bus driver why and they will help you.
4.) THERE AREN’T ANY BUS ROUTES TO GET TO MY DESTINATION
FACT: COTA has 68 Local, Express & Crosstown bus lines, SIXTY-EIGHT. I am sure that you can find a way to wherever you are going. It may not be the most direct route, but with a transfer and some time you’ll be able to get where you’re going.
Also, if you’re unsure of when to transfer or where you should get off, ask your driver, they will certainly tell you! It is about planning your trip and being flexible with time to get from one place to another.
5.) IT’S DIRTY
Actually, COTA buses are kept extremely clean, especially the new ones. I think this misconception comes less from the actual dirt that is on a bus, and more from some of the bodily odor of other riders.
At times the bus can smell as if an elementary school class just came in from recess on a hot summer day…yeah you know that pre-deodorant smell. This is just something out of your control and COTA’s control. I suggest to not breathe deeply when this happens.
So, don’t be afraid, enjoy your safe, clean ride through Columbus with all the free smells you want. And if you think that we missed any other misconceptions tell us!
